![]() ![]() The assumption is that an ancient civilization came up with tech that allows for the "magic" to happen. Now, we could say that shows like Star Gate did the same thing, but the big difference here is that The spore drive requires a HUGE suspense of disbelief. "What if there was an intergalactic mushroom (how did this spread? Isn't this basically assuming that this thing was came into existence right when the big bang occurred?) that somehow nobody ever noticed, that functions as some sort of wormhole, but only when we somehow turn it on." What if we could generate this thing that would allow y to happen, according to the way we think the universe works?" What makes the warp drive more sensible or "closer" to hard sci-fi is that the unconfirmed assumptions about reality are well contained. Now the spore drive requires us to assume a bunch of weird physics, AND that somehow the entire universe is populated by imperceptible magical quantum space mushrooms, and that this allows us to basically teleport. The leap is fairly small, because the step away from realism is simply a "what if we figure out how x works, and it works in y way?" ![]() The warp drive "only" requires certain, possible, but not yet observed, properties of the universe to be true. The problem I see with the spore drive is plausibility. Only if you have no idea whatsoever of physics. Think for yourself: Topics that boil down to "Should I watch.", "Will I like.", "Change my view on.", "Does anyone else.", or "Tell me what to think" are not contributing anything to the community.Ĭlick here for the full & detailed guidelines Upcoming Episodes: Date Meta: Send a modmail instead of making public posts or comments about: other users of this subreddit, the rules or moderators, the community at large or other subreddits, downvotes/upvotes.Ĩ. ![]() There is no formal spoiler protection for episodes/films after they have been available for approximately one week.ħ.
